Martin Rezard was born in France. As a teenager he started making creatures: masks, models and puppets. He took his inspiration from watching movies such as The Dark Crystal, The Empire Strikes Back and Gremlins. Eventually, he got so skilled at it that he decided to make a career out of it, without as much as even having followed any kind of proper education. He didn’t stop there as he ventured into other territories and started with conceptual design, sculpting and making makeup prosthetics. Nowadays he has been active in the field for over 25 years which all started out in Paris but took him to Australia after some time.
At the end of the nineties he lived in Sydney when he got a call from the supervisor of Lucasfilm’s costume department asking if he would be interested to come and work there. At that time the production of Attack of the Clones was underway. For this movie, Martin worked on the costumes of Jango Fett and Zam Wesell amongst other things. When the production of Revenge of the Sith started, he was asked back and one of his tasks was to help and recreate the costume of Darth Vader.
In 2005 he moved to London, England. Several television and movie projects followed. In 2011 he worked with Neal Scanlan on the Alien prequel Prometheus. Neal became the Head of the Creature Shop at Lucasfilm not long after and asked Martin to join the team. He started on The Force Awakens for which he designed several creatures from Maz Kanata’s castle and made the special effects makeup for some of them as well. Besides that, he also sculpted Nien Nunb and Admiral Ackbar (played by Tim Rose). Next up came Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, for which he both designed and sculpted Admiral Raddus (played by Paul Kasey) amongst other things. For Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo – A Star Wars Story he also created creatures and currently he’s working on Star Wars: Episode IX.
Beside the Star Wars movies he worked on many other productions. Think of series as Farscape, Dr. Who, Torchwood, Merlin and Game of Thrones, and movies such as The Matrix, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, World War Z, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Jurassic World 2. All in all a very impressive service record.
Martin Rezard will be taking part in a signing session and a panel at Echo Base Charity Con.
