Zo werd de op afstand bedienbare uitvoering van Sphero al voordat The Force Awakens uitkwam een enorme hit. BB-8 werd voor een aantal scènes door middel van CGI gerealiseerd, maar in de meeste gevallen was BB-8 een "echte" robot die door acteur en poppenspeler Brian Herring tot leven werd gewekt. Hij vervulde deze taak niet alleen voor The Force Awakens maar ook voor de nieuwe film The Last Jedi.
